Fast Metabolism
Close your eyes. Think back to when you were a kid growing up. What were you doing?
If you were anything like me, you were constantly moving; especially during the summer. I remember waking up in the morning, getting dressed, and going straight outside or my dad taking my brother and I to the local park to swim at the pool. Even after coming back home we would play basketball until dinner was ready.
During the school year it wasn’t much different. The school day started at 8:15 and ended at 3:15. Throughout the school day we sat for about an hour learning a particular subject; hung out in the hall for 10-15 minutes, then rushed to the next class. After school ended there was baseball practice. Whether you played baseball, basketball, football, or for the ladies had cheer practice, softball, basketball too, or tennis; we ALL were constantly on the move. AKA burning calories.
At a younger age we could get away with eating bad because we were more muscular. Which means our metabolism was faster. I remember going to Pizza Hut EVERY SINGLE DAY during the summer to eat the famous Smoke House Pizza. Did I mention every single day? It was our favorite pizza to eat.
Slow Metabolism
Now that were older we aren’t moving as much. We sit at our desk for 7 to 7 1/2 hours straight. Only to get up to eat a meal that is more like what we ate growing up in school. Or, if we were trying to “diet” we may eat a salad that doesn’t have an adequate enough protein. Heck, it may even be slopped with dressing that is full of calories. You would’ve been better off eating a hamburger from McDonald’s. Not kidding.
All of these things add up over the years and we tell ourselves, “Well, I can’t lose any weight because i’m just getting older”.
NO. NOT TRUE. YOU’RE NOT MOVING ANYMORE!
Summary
Being active, eating protein, and doing a type of strength training program is going to help you build muscle. Which in turn, is going to boost your metabolism. With that being said, don’t be scared to lift weights and eat more protein. The only way you’re going to gain muscle is to consume enough protein and to be in a caloric surplus. After putting on a few pounds of muscle, you’ll be in a better position to get into a caloric deficit to trim off that excess fat. This will be better long term because your metabolism will be faster.
If you’re a woman I know this process may seem scary. If you keep attending your cardio sessions without doing some type of strength training, you’ll eventually get to a point where you’ll hit a plateau. You’ll eventually stop attending class bc you can’t afford to give up anymore calories or are burnt out because you’re tired of doing all of those cardio sessions.
