The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party: Georgia Bulldogs vs Florida Gators
I cannot believe it has been over 15 years since 2007, 16 to be exact. That is actually the year I graduated high school.
Sheesh.
The summer after graduating from high school was an exciting time in my life. I was invited to the 2007 Pre-Draft, met Antonio Grissom (Marquis Grissom's brother), and then enrolled at North Florida Community College to play baseball. Thanks to Antonio, my dreams of playing pro ball were getting closer.
When I moved to Florida, I didn’t really have any expectations when it came to where I was going to be living. I assumed I would be in a dorm room or, if I was lucky, an apartment. I wasn’t expecting to live in the “freshman” house with 7 other guys. Seven guys in a 4-bedroom house... well, let’s just say it wasn’t ideal.
As you could guess, we had guys from all over the U.S., all the way from Cali to New York, down to Florida. We had this one kid from Ocala who would always try to jump on the alligators that were in the swamp in our backyard. The dude was crazy AF. This guy could wake up in the morning, drink a 6 pack, smoke 2 cigarettes, and still run 3 miles in under 15 minutes.
He wasn’t the only Florida native in our house. We had one other guy who was more 'buttoned-up,' you could say. He wasn’t too big on turning into Crocodile Dundee after practice like the other guy. He was a huge Florida Gator fan, and lucky for him and the rest of the Gator fans, they had a weapon on their team—Tim Tebow."
The previous year I remember thinking, who in the heck is this guy? After beating us 21-14 and then going undefeated the rest of the year, I thought, this guy is going to be a problem for us next year.
But I remember going into the 2007 season feeling a little more confident, especially playing against Florida. I mean, how could you not when you have the legendary Matthew Stafford, Mohamed Massaquoi, and Knowshon Moreno… absolute studs."
Boy was I right.
When the Dawgs ran out onto the field after scoring the first touchdown of the game, I knew they already had it won. They were making a statement, and boy, did it give me the ammunition I needed to talk trash to my teammate.
He was pissed. I loved every minute of it.
He actually didn’t talk to me for about 2 weeks, but by then the Gators had 2 more Ws to add to their season. I can’t say he was over the upset, but things were looking up for his team.
The next few years were rough for us Georgia fans, but we finally got it together. Which brings us to today; 2023.
Coming off back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022, I’d say we’ve come a long way since 2007.
We haven’t faced any setbacks in a long time, so it’ll be interesting to see how we do without having Brock Bowers in the game. Let's see who is going to step up to help the Dawgs continue their winning streak.
