FAT PARENTS: You’re Setting A Bad Example For Your Kids

Let me start this blog post off by saying, I don’t have kids. The closest thing I have to kids are my 2 nephews, so I feel like I have some expertise here. For what it’s worth, I am a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and, I was a Physical Training Leader (PTL) during my time in the military to give myself a little more credibility.

Humble brag - my nephews look up to me. And so they should, i’m their uncle. Heck, they look up to everyone in the family. I’m sure your kids look up to you too…

That is actually the point of this blog post - SHOULD THEY?

Did you know that 100 MILLION adults & 14.7 MILLION children are obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Let’s not focus on the kids just yet. I’m more concerned with the adults in the room, or, if you’re still here, the blog aka The Dove’s Nest.

Now, i’m not trying to stand on some high horse saying i’m better than anyone, because i’m not. I’m sure there’s things overweight people are better at than me. Probably a few things.

Also, i’m not trying to fat shame them.

Wait, hypothetically, what if I was? Maybe I am - Maybe I am fat shaming them!

Sit back and feel this… Feel this deep down in your feels… How does it make you feel? It probably makes you want to cry.

It probably hurts. It hurts really bad.

Now…

Now lets talk about the kids. You know, the ones that parents say “I would do anything for them” AH! Anything?

BET.

So let’s get into this…

How do you think they feel being picked on for being overweight? When this happens to them at such a young age, they don’t understand. All they understand is that someone is making fun of them & and it hurts their heart.

To be honest, I hurt for those kids. I feel really bad, because they think it’s normal. It’s not fair to that child.

Their parents are setting them up for failure & it’s not fair.

Did I mention it’s not fair?

Children look up to us. They watch everything we do. They want to grow up to be just like us. The only thing is, maybe they shouldn’t - they are just kids. They don’t know any better. They only know what we teach them. If we teach them good habits then they will have good habits. If we teach them bad habits, then they will have bad habits. It’s really that simple. That can be applied to anything - not just nutrition.

As adults, it’s our responsibility to educate ourselves so that we can be the role model that we need to be for our children and the younger generation. It’s up to us to lead them down the right path; spiritually, mentally, & physically.

So, to all of the ADULTS here… Take the time to learn what it will take for you to live a healthier lifestyle so that you can be the role model your children really need.

They are counting on us.
